New Delhi: A video of West Bengal's Malda has surfaced on social media platforms showing two women being beaten and displayed half-naked. The incident reportedly took place in the Pakuahat area of โโMalda district. However, the exact time of the incident is unknown. The clip comes right in the middle of the outrage that was generated by the Manipur sexual assault video from May 4.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred three to four days ago. Local people in Pakuahat de Malda had caught the two women on suspicion of robbery and had beaten them. It can be seen in the video that some women ripped the victims' sarees and stripped them almost naked while simultaneously beating them with shoes.
The head of the BJP's IT department, Amit Malviya, who is also the party's co-charge of status, took to Twitter and said the incident took place on July 19, with a "frantic crowd howling for his blood." Malviya said: โThe horror continues in West Bengal. Two tribal women were stripped naked, tortured and mercilessly beaten while police stood mute as spectators in the Pakua Hat area of โโBamangola Police Station, Malda.โ Malviya also posted a video with blurry images of the crime.

Police respond after viral video surfaced in Malda
The police claimed that they first realized what had happened after seeing the footage. After a preliminary investigation, it was found that the two ladies had been beaten by neighborhood merchants after being apprehended while committing a theft. After the incident, the women who had witnessed it also fled and those who had beaten them were afraid to report it.
According to the West Bengal Police, โThe incident occurred in the Pakuhat area of โโMalda 3-4 days ago. Two women were caught on suspicion of theft by local merchants. Both women were beaten by local merchants. Subsequently, both women left or escaped from the area and did not file any police complaint. The merchants did not present any complaint in this regard either. Police are investigating the situation and appropriate action will be taken.
