Biosecurity Blitz helping to fight backyard pests

  • The WA community is encouraged to register and look for pests that pose a risk to agriculture and the environment
  • More than 1,000 reports made last year
  • Month-long biosecurity blitz begins October 16, 2023

Western Australians are encouraged to help protect the state's vital agricultural industry from potentially harmful pests and diseases by signing up to the annual Biosecurity Blitz.

The month-long event begins on October 16, 2023, and the WA community is asked to keep an eye out for interesting insects and plants living in suburban backyards, bushlands and parks.

Most are harmless, but some can damage your garden or threaten WA's forests and agricultural industry.

Reporting is easy: use a mobile phone to upload photos and information to the MyPestGuideยฎ Reporter App or online portal through the website below. Last year there were 1,252 reports during the Biosecurity Blitz.

These reports improve the chances of eradication, safeguarding WA's access to international trade markets.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is currently responding to two key pests in the metropolitan area: the Queensland fruit fly and the polyphagous borer.

Comments attributed to the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Jackie Jarvis:

"The Biosecurity Blitz is a fun way for families to join pest surveillance efforts and protect the state's agricultural sector and environment.

"Each report helps increase the likelihood of early detection of serious pests and diseases, giving us a better chance of eradicating or containing them.

"Negative reports or lack of detections of specific pests can also support our access to valuable export markets for our fruit and vegetable products."
