BJPโ€™s Ram Shankar Katheria Gets 2-Year Jail Term In Assault Case, May Lose MP Status

Ram Shankar Katheria is accused of assaulting a power company employee in 2011.

Bharatiya Janata Party MP Ram Shankar Katheria was on Saturday sentenced to two-year in jail by an Agra court in connection with a 2011 assault case, putting him at risk of losing his MP status. He is the sitting Lok Sabha member from Etawah in Uttar Pradesh.

Ram Shankar Katheria is likely to challenge the sentence in a higher court.

โ€œ...I appeared before the court normally. Court has given a decision against me today. I respect the court, I have the right to appeal and I will exercise itโ€, Ram Shankar Katheria said.

A former Union minister, Ram Shankar Katheria is accused of assaulting a power company employee in 2011. Accompanied by 10-15 supporters, the BJP leader forcibly entered into the office of Torrent Power, a power distribution comapny, and vandalised its office and attacked a manager. A case was registered against Mr Katheria following a complaint by a company executive.

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has demanded his disqualification from the Lok Sabha.

An elected representative sentenced for any offence for two years or more faces immediate disqualification under the Representation of People Act, 1951.

Ram Shankar Katheria had served as the Union Minister of State, Ministry of Human Resource Development from November 2014 to July 2016.

He was also the chairperson of National Commission for Scheduled Castes. He is a member of Parliament's Standing Committee on Defence and Consultative Committee, Ministry of Home Affairs.
