Canada’s police branch alerts about burglaries of cryptocurrency investors

A division of the Canadian police has publicly reported a potential trend of high-value cryptocurrency investors being burglarized from their own homes, as stated by Cointelegraph.

According to Cointelegraph, on July 19, 2023, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), in Richmond, Vancouver, stated that similar thefts based on cryptocurrency investors have occurred in the past year. Gene Hsieh, a staff sergeant with the Richmond RCMP Major Crimes Unit, said someone is “targeting these victims for cryptocurrency,” along with the need for a public warning about it.

According to Cointelegraph data, RCMP did not disclose full details on the matter, but it is understood that the thief appeared disguised as a delivery man before carrying out the robberies. “Suspects gain access to a victim's home by posing as delivery men or persons of authority. Once they enter the home, the suspects steal the information from the victims that gives them access to their cryptocurrency accounts,” RCMP noted.

Additionally, Cointelegraph noted that Jill Long, staff sergeant with Delta Police Investigative Services, said the suspects are under the impression that the victims are “very” invested in cryptocurrency and also know their locations. The police department has reportedly made an arrest, but has yet to confirm if there is a connection to the cryptocurrency incidents.
