Cars swept away in flashfloods as Spainโ€™s Balearic Islands battered by storms

STORMS continue to hit the Balearic Islands with severe floods that destroy homes, businesses and roads.

The most affected are Menorca and Mallorca, which remains on an orange alert as more heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected.

Torrential rains along the The Balearic Islands have caused chaos, submerging streets and highways in mighty rivers of rainwater. Homes and businesses have also flooded after the flood.

The Civil Guard, the Fire Department of the Consell, the Local Police and the 112 Emergency Department were flooded with calls for help from residents of Alcudia, Pollensa, Muro, Felanitx, Sรณller, sa Pobla, Palma and Manacor.

Alcudia was one of the most affected areas with access roads submerged in water and closed to traffic. Firefighters rescued a man from his car after being caught in flooding on the Alcudia ring road.

Volunteers came out in force using buckets to help clean up the water in the streets near s'Albufera in Playa de Muro, until emergency services arrived to help.

In Pollensa, an empty car was swept away by the torrent. The treacherous weather also caused trees to fall, blocking roads and the collapse of stone walls in Portocolom, Sรณller, Manacor and Palma.

The neighboring island of Menorca has also been severely affected with 14 incidents recorded in Ferreries, Es Mercadal, Ciutadella and Mahรณn.

More than 80 liters per m2 of rain fell in one hour in the municipality of Ferreries and the Son Granot torrent overflowed, flooding the Maรณ-Ciutadella highway and several farms and secondary roads in the area.
