Centre Blocks YouTube Videos, Tweets Sharing BBC Documentary on PM Modi

New Delhi: He Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) on Saturday blocked multiple Youtube videos sharing the first episode of the BBC documentary โ€œIndia: The Modi Questionโ€ have been blocked. According to an ANI report citing sources, the Center has also directed Twitter to block more than 50 tweets that contain links to the interested parties Youtube videos.

Both YouTube and Twitter complied with the government after the Broadcasting and Information Secretary issued instructions on Friday using emergency powers under the IT Rules 2021.

Although the documentary was not made available in India by BBC India, some YouTube channels seem to have uploaded it to promote an anti-India agenda.

The sources said that YouTube has also been instructed to block the video if it is uploaded to its platform again. They added that Twitter has also been told to identify and block tweets that link to the video on other platforms.

This decision was made after senior government officials from various ministries reviewed the documentary and found it to be an attempt to cast doubt on the authority and credibility of the Supreme Court of India and sow divisions among various Indian communities.

The sources added that the documentary was consequently found to undermine India's sovereignty and integrity and has the potential to negatively affect India's friendly relations with foreign states.

Center criticizes BBC documentary, calls it piece of propaganda

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA) on Thursday criticized the BBC's controversial documentary series on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing it as a "propaganda piece" designed to push a discredited narrative.

โ€œWe believe this is a piece of propaganda designed to push a particular discredited narrative. The bias and lack of objectivity and the frankly persistent colonial mentality are blatantly visible,โ€ Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said during a weekly news briefing.
