Changes to management of SSE Thermal business unit

SSE today announced that Catherine Raw, CEO of SSE Thermalwill leave SSE in April 12, 2024 to pursue an opportunity at global mining company BHP, where it will be based in Australia.

Catherine joined SSE in early 2022 following a successful career at mining company Barrick Gold, where she held senior positions in North America. As CEO of SSE Thermal, Catherine currently oversees the strategy, performance and development of the company's flexible energy generation and storage activities.

SSE Thermal has had a very strong performance in recent years, underlining its importance to the group. The company has achieved a number of important financial and strategic milestones that set it up for future success, including:

  • Deliver strong profits and reliable plant performance as SSE Thermal's flexible fleet and storage respond to increasing demands for system security.
  • Commissioning of Keadby 2 earlier this year, adding Europe's most efficient thermal power plant to SSE Thermal's market-leading portfolio.
  • acquire, with Equinor, Triton's value-added thermal assets, enhance SSE Thermal's fleet, consolidate SSE Thermal's position in the Humber and advance its hydrogen-to-energy strategy.
  • Help secure Ireland's electricity supply with temporary emergency generation in Tarbert and investments in sustainable biofuels in Tarbert and Platin.
  • establishment of SSE's Hydrogen Center of Excellence, including the start of the company's first hydrogen investment at H2NorthEast
  • progressing Keadby 3 CCS and Peterhead CCS, including securing planning permission for Keadby 3 and taking both projects through the Track 1 and Track 2 industrial grouping processes

SSE has now commenced a recruitment process for his successor and will update him in due course. Following his departure, Martin Pibworth, commercial director, will provide additional support to the business while his successor is recruited and onboarded.

Martin Pibworth, commercial director, said:

โ€œWe thank Catherine for her work over the last two years, where she has made a real impact, overseeing the thermal business as it continues to go from strength to strength. SSE Thermal has an extremely bright future built around hugely talented people, world-class assets and partnerships, and a growing portfolio of low carbon projects that can make a big difference as the UK and Ireland decarbonise while keeping the at the same time a secure electricity supply. While it is sad to see Catherine depart, I have every confidence that her successor will be highly influential as SSE Thermal helps provide the flexibility needed to transition and then incorporate a net zero energy system.โ€
