Beijing, June 30 China's meteorological and water resources authorities on Sunday afternoon renewed a red alert (its highest-level alert) for mountain torrents as storms continue to soak parts of the country.

According to the Ministry of Water Resources and the China Meteorological Administration, mountain torrents are very likely to occur in parts of Hunan and Guizhou between 8:00 p.m. Sunday and 8:00 p.m. Monday, Xinhua news agency reported.

The two departments also issued an orange alert for mountain torrents in northeastern Guangxi.

Temporary heavy rain in other areas could also trigger mountain torrents, officials said.

Localities have been advised to strengthen real-time flood monitoring and warning procedures, prepare for possible evacuation, and take precautionary measures to minimize risks.

In a separate update, the National Meteorological Center issued an orange warning for rainstorms on Sunday night.

Torrential rain is expected in parts of Jiangsu, Anhui, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou and Guangxi, with some regions likely to experience heavy rainfall of up to 260 millimetres in 24 hours, ending at 8 p.m. on Monday, according to the National Meteorological Center.

China has a four-tier color-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe warning, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
