City of Hoboken expands EV charging infrastructure, furthering Hoboken Climate Action Plan

The City of Hoboken today announced that four new on-street electric vehicle charging stations, including the city's first two DC fast charging stations, are available for public use in west Hoboken. The new stations will help increase accessibility to electric vehicle charging and promote the city.Climate action plan goals of being net zero energy by 2030 and carbon neutral by 2050.

โ€œMaking electric vehicle charging stations available to residents is a key action item in our Climate Action Plan to ensure we help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.โ€ said Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla. โ€œIt is essential that we do everything we can to ensure our community is resilient and sustainable for generations to come. โ€œI hope there are additional stations in operation so that all residents can have access to this crucial infrastructure.โ€

Two DC fast chargers are available at the Monroe Arts Center on the west side of Monroe Street between Seventh and Eighth Streets. They offer charging speeds of 50 kW, which can charge a vehicle's battery from 20 to 80 percent in about an hour or less. The rate is $0.49 per kWh while charging and $0.50 per minute while the vehicle is plugged in but no longer charging.

There are two โ€œLevel 2โ€ charging stations available in Columbus Park on the south side of 10th Street between Clinton and Grand Streets. These charging stations can add between 20 and 25 miles of range per hour and will be free for a period of 6 months until April 30, 2024.

The new electric vehicle charging stations, installed at no cost to the City, are the first of 25 new stations which, when combined with the 11 Level 2 charging stations the city previously installed, will ensure that residents across the city will be within a 5-minute walk of a public charging station by 2030. Starting in 2021, access stations Hoboken public have had a total of 16,338 charging sessions. The only other curbside charging station in Hoboken, on First Street, accounted for 40 percent of total sessions.
