CM-led moot reviews pace of progress on Sorra Dam

LAHORE - The provincial government will build the Sorra Dam with 10 billion rupees to store water from the hill streams in the Koh-e-Suleman mountain range for agricultural and irrigation purposes. The first stone of the project will be laid early next year.

In this regard, Punjab's Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar chaired a meeting to review the progress of the plan designed to save 51,000 cusecs of water. The chief secretary, SMBR, P&D president, finance secretary and others attended the meeting, while DG Khan's commissioner participated via video link.

The CM ordered the authorities to complete the project within the stipulated time period, working on the project at a rapid pace. He appreciated the fact that the Sorra dam would also act as an area development project to provide job opportunities along with the availability of abundant water up to Taunsa. "In the same way, agricultural activities will be promoted along with the promotion of tourism," he added.

"The land acquisition process was completed and the technical team approved the design of the dam," he said, adding that the level of the dam would be 258 feet higher than the river. "It is noteworthy that the development process has reached remote and backward areas," remarked the CM and mentioned that the people of the most backward area would not have dreamed of having a dam in their territory.

Previously, the irrigation secretary informed the participants about the main characteristics of the project.
