Council investigating complaint of racist abuse against child

Mid Ulster District Council he is currently investigating an incident in which a council staff member allegedly racially abused a three-week-old boy.

Sinn Fein Torrent councilor Niamh Doris raised the issue during a full council meeting Thursday, saying she was "furious" after hearing the reports.

The alleged abuse was reportedly directed at a mother who had given her son an Irish name.

"I have been infuriated to hear reports yesterday that a child was allegedly subjected to horrific racist abuse by one of our city council employees in a customer service role, who allegedly had a problem with an Irish mother who gave his Irish son an Irish name, "Cllr said Doris.

โ€œWhile I accept that the Executive Director and the Council have initiated an investigation into this matter, if all this is shown to be a factual account of what happened, I want to express in the strongest terms my condemnation of what at the age of only three years weeks is a child's first experience of racism.

โ€œWhile it is even more shocking that this incident stands out, many people have approached me to say that they have had similar experiences to this, whether they are Poles, Lithuanians or of other origin.

"I also want to take this opportunity to express my deepest regret for this incident and my sincere apologies to all who have been affected in this way."

A spokesperson for the Mid Ulster District Council confirmed that the issue is currently under investigation.

โ€œA complaint has been received and is being investigated. Therefore, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this point, โ€the spokesperson said.
