Councillor raises concerns over โ€œtorrents of water streaming across Tipperary motorwayโ€™

Elected City Council members for the Roscrea, Templemore and Thurles area will soon submit a report to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) on the issues they believe need to be addressed most urgently on the local road network and a dangerous junction in Roscrea and other problems. relating to the M7 motorway near the city were among four selected by members.

The junction on the Roscrea bypass in Tullaskeagh leading to Knock Road and the site of fatal accidents in the past, will be highlighted again for TII this year after making the same blacklist last year.

The intersection will soon carry an even greater traffic load as large-scale residential developments are underway on the road that serves as a primary route for people traveling by foot and vehicle to work and school.

Cllr Shane Lee raised the issue at a City Council meeting and warned there will again be a tragic accident at the crossing if repair work is not carried out soon to promote safety.

Cllr Michael Smith echoed this, saying the crossing became a priority after a fatal accident, but โ€œfell down the listโ€ and was neglected for several years.

โ€œWe have to take this seriously with TII. We need results,โ€ said Cllr Smith.

Problems with standing water and torrents of water flowing across the M7 motorway were also highlighted by Cllr Lee, who said more than 20 cars were forced to park on the hard shoulder of the M7 recently because the motorway had become โ€œ unusableโ€ during heavy rains.

The stretch of motorway between junction 22 Roscrea and junction 23 Moneygall has been flagged as particularly dangerous in bad weather and experiencing a microclimate of fog and rain, as reported at previous meetings.

Another issue that needs to be raised is the surface of the N62 road from Templemore to junction 22 of the M8 at Horse and Jockey, which Cllr Noel Coonan told the meeting needs urgent repairs.

Public demand for a bypass in Thurles, which remains the only major town in the county without a bypass to relieve freight traffic congestion in the town center and at the Turtulla junction near Thurles, which has been the scene of serious traffic accidents in the past, are other points that will be highlighted as urgent this year when local authorities meet with TII.
