Drug-dealing and vandalism making life hell for residents of Limerick estate

A torrent of antisocial behavior, racism, drug trafficking and violence is turning life into hell for the residents of a Limerick City estate.

When it was built, Johnsgate Village was one of the most sought after locations in the city. However, in recent years, the area has seen an influx of crime and antisocial behavior.

Several residents are now working together to restore it to its former glory. the Irish Examiner I spoke with several of these residents who echoed the same concerns regarding the situation.

โ€œThey live in fear. Their lives are horrible, โ€said one resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

When asked why he wished to remain anonymous, the resident in question explained that it is a small area, and that those responsible for the criminal conduct "know who lives where" and are "sure" there will be retaliation.

The resident said that in recent years they had seen violent clashes between families in the area, several houses had their windows "closed" and constant verbal abuse, including threats and racism, were directed at innocent neighbors.

โ€œThere is a couple who don't want to step foot outside their door. That is not a way to live โ€, they added.

One resident explained that they have been working with the Gardaรญ and Limerick City Council, "which have been excellent," but their efforts are hampered by the fact that the houses on the estate are privately owned.

Councilman John Costelloe says he has been contacted by numerous residents recently.

โ€œContainers are being burned, houses are being destroyed. There is drug use outdoors, in front of the children. A resident left his house out of fear. He just left, with the keys in the door, โ€Costelloe said.
