Drunk man made Taliban explosion threat during โ€˜torrentโ€™ of abuse on 999 call

A drunken man claimed he was from the Taliban and would cause an explosion during a "rush" of racial abuse on a 999 operator in Birmingham. Shika Khimji had a five-year history of making similar calls to emergency services, the city's crown court heard.

Khimji called the call manager twice on the afternoon of December 11 last year. Judge Francis Laird QC said: "On the second occasion, you started making nasty racist comments to him.

โ€œYou claimed, obviously falsely, that you were a member of the Taliban and that you would cause an explosion. She reported the matter to the police and when the officers arrived at your home you were drunk.

"You were abusive and racially offensive to them. Any reasonable person would be horrified by your behavior. All three victims of your offenses are hardworking and diligent public servants."

"It is deeply concerning that these individuals, in the performance of their duties, are being subjected to a torrent of racially aggravated abuse, in a context in which you have committed similar crimes."

The judge said Khimji had not gotten into trouble until 2016, but after that his life had taken a nosedive and he was drinking heavily. "Tragically, your life has been totally hijacked by drinking," he added.

The judge said he accepted that Khimji was trying to fix his problem and was prepared to give him a chance. Khimji, 51, of Strensham Road, balsall Heather, who had previously admitted assaulting an emergency worker, racially aggravated harassment and making a malicious communication, was sentenced to an 18-month community order.

Spencer Stephens, in defence, said: "These are clearly disgusting offences, sadly a repeat of a pattern from the last five years. What is clearly behind this is Khimji's drinking problem, something he is motivated to address." .
