Egyptian Irrigation Ministry assures nation is prepared against torrential rains โ€“ Egypt Independent

Egypt's Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources announced Monday that the country is well prepared for the destructive dangers of torrential rains in the governorates.

Ministry spokesman Mohamed Ghanem said the Egyptian state is well prepared for the floods and all ministry agencies are regularly checking all spillways to make sure they are functioning unhindered.

He added that more than 1,500 facilities have been established in recent years in all flood-risk-prone areas, such as the Red Sea, Upper Egypt, North and South Sinai and Matrouh governorates.

These facilities have proven their efficiency and were able to protect people and facilities from the destructive effects of the floods in Aswan, he said.

He explained that Aswan witnessed large amounts of rain falling in a short period of time, which accumulated and fell as a highly destructive torrent that rushed from the mountain at a speed of 100 km.

Dams collect this torrent into man-made lakes, rather than going through the streets and flooding villages, allowing the Egyptian state to protect people and facilities, he said.

He assured that there are no weather forecasts for other floods in a particular governorate and that the Aswan floods were predicted sometime before their occurrence through mathematical models and satellites.

Ghanem emphasized that what happened in Aswan is a natural phenomenon that can occur every year, as this issue is compatible with the nature of flash floods.
