How to Unlock the Horse in Elden Ring Explained

As we mentioned, the Elden Ring horse is not available out of the box. Once you're in the world, you need to look for Places of Grace, which are the Elden Ring's equivalent to the bonfires in Dark Souls.

To unlock the horse in the Elden Ring, you must activate three Grace Sites and rest on the third.

Once you do, the character Melina will visit you for the first time. She is one of the key characters in the game, providing you with bits of world history and allowing you to level up your stats.

During this first visit, she will grant you a ring called the Spectral Steed Whistle. This allows to summon the horse, called Torrent.

If you are wondering how the horse works both in combat and in the wild, jump (or gallop?) To the next section.

How Torrent works on the Elden Ring

It is very likely that Torrent will quickly become your traveling companion on the Elden Ring. The horse allows for greater mobility than we are used to in FromSoftware games, which is even more important with the vastness of this new open world.

Right from the start, in addition to increasing overall speed, Torrent can perform double jumps. This allows for more verticality during your exploration - if you find treasure on the surface or are simply trying to escape an enemy group, this is your option. There are also certain points on the map where you can perform a super jump.

Speaking of enemies, you can also use Torrent during combat. Elden Ring mounted combat is quite different from normal encounters - you can only use your right hand weapon (during the net test, at least!) And it also allows spells. With that said, it's definitely worth practicing on smaller enemies before trying to take down the bosses on your horse.

Torrent can be ethereal, but not eternal. Your horse can take damage during combat, and if it is completely exhausted, it will die. Don't worry though, as you can summon them again at any time with two methods (at least from what we gathered during our time with the network test):

  • Resting in a place of grace
  • Use one of your health flasks to retrieve them immediately

That's all you need to know about Torrent. Now go, let the legend come to life!
