‘End of an era’ — Consensys sunsets Truffle, Ganache amid shift to Metamask Snaps

Ethereum developers are gathering to say hello to the teams behind Ganache and Truffle, two toolsets that were once vital in the early days of Ethereum smart contracts.

In a post on September 22, Consensys announced the end of the two products amid a broader shift towards Metamask Snaps and SDKs.

Georgios Konstantopoulos, CTO and partner at Paradigm, described the announcement as the “end of an era” and shared that he had written his first smart contract in Truffle Suite.

Similarly, pseudonymous developer and popular crypto commentator Foobar wrote that Truffle was the first tech stack he used to write smart contracts on Ethereum.

“The set of tools that helped me start my career. You’ve probably contributed more to the space than you know.” wrote another Ethereum developer in response to the announcement.

Truffle Suite was launched in 2015 and Consensys acquired its team and technology in 2020. At the time of the acquisition, Consensys said the Truffle suite was trusted by 1.3 million developers worldwide.

To facilitate the transition phase between technology stacks, Consensys explained in a separate blog. mail which would partner with HardHat to help developers continue writing and deploying new software on the Ethereum network.

"We are investing in new tools and APIs to enable developers to create powerful DApps with MetaMask, Infura and Linea, which is why the Truffle engineering team will join these teams to accelerate the development of their developer offerings," he wrote Consensys.

According to a report dated September 22 mail on X (formerly known as Twitter), Truffle Suite will be shut down over the course of the next 90 days. After that, the Truffle and Ganache codebases will continue to be available as public files, according to Consensys.

In the Ethereum development community, Ganache was a popular tool for creating, testing, and deploying smart contracts. It was a highly sought-after technology stack due to its interoperability with Truffle Suite, a development framework for creating, testing, and deploying smart contracts on Ethereum.

Metamask “Snaps” is Consensys' name for new DApps created by third-party developers that extend the functionality of the Metamask wallet. Simon Morris, head of strategy at Consensys recently shared with Cointelegraph that the soon-to-be-released MetaMask Snaps will work similarly to Apple's App Store.
