Scroll, a new contender in the zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) space working to scale the blockchain, has confirmed the launch of its mainnet.
The team behind Scroll Announced launch in an October 17 post, adding that existing applications and developer toolkits on Ethereum can now migrate to the new scaling solution.

A zkEVM solution like Scroll's aims to provide lower transaction costs with higher performance for decentralized applications running on Ethereum.
It works by grouping thousands of off-chain transactions in aand then sends a proof consisting of a minimal data summary to the Ethereum mainnet.
Blockchain data suggests that Scroll had hidden the news that its mainnet was active since October 8, the date the first smart contract was deployed on Scroll's mainnet. according to Etherscan data.
Scroll said the mainnet launch came after 15 months of extensive testing and security audits on three independent test networks.
"Our bridge and cumulative contracts were audited by OpenZeppelin and Zellic," Scroll added. Their zkEVM circuits were reviewed by Trail of Bits, Zellic and KALOS.
More than 450,000 smart contracts were deployed across its three testnets, enabling more than 90 million transactions in 9 million blocks. According to the company, 280,000 ZK tests were also generated.

About a month ago, Scroll co-founder Ye Zhang told Cointelegraph that Scroll would launch with centralized features, but that it plans to become more and more decentralized over time.
"We will have a centralized sequencer and a central approval button," Zhang said. However, he added that there is a plan to remove that button.
“We have a roadmap [...] “Solve the single point of failure and incentivize the community to build better test hardware.”
Zhang said the Scroll team will also put forward several proposals to allow the community to discuss what is best for Scroll in the future.

Scroll was founded in 2021 with the goal of being more community driven. Other zkEVM solutions that work for scaling Ethereum include Polygon, zkSync, StarkWare and Immutable.
Jordi Baylina, technical lead at Polygon Hermez zkEVM, recently told Cointelegraph that such competition in the zkEVM space it will only make the Ethereum ecosystem more robust:
“Having different projects adds a lot of experience and is also a way to try different approaches, ways of handling things or solving them,” he said.
