Ethereum TPS boost? Starknet ‘Quantum Leap’ goes live

The highly anticipated Quantum Leap upgrade using the Starknet layer 2 scaling protocol was recently implemented on the Ethereum mainnet, allowing up to 90 transactions per second (TPS), increasing network speeds.

In an announcement sent to Cointelegraph, Uri Kolodny, co-founder and CEO of StarkWare, said it is a momentous day for the Ethereum blockchain as the ceiling for scale has been “broken.” He explained that “high TPS is finally a reality on Ethereum mainnet” due to the new update, adding:

“We said this update would generate potential TPS in the hundreds in Q3, and we just hoped the stress test would verify we're on target. A few dozen TPS at this early point would have left us excited, but we got more than we bargained for."

Kolodny also noted that he managed to post a consistent 37 TPS. In addition, the executive also noted that during his peak times, the tests showed that the transfer transactions per second almost reached 100.

On July 5, the Starknet quantum leap was deployed on a testnet, recording speeds of up to triple digits. At the time of the testnet deployment, the team announced that it expected the "inclusion time" to be around 15 seconds. This means decentralized applications (DApps) you can confirm on-chain transactions in seconds, but the reality exceeded expectations.

“We were aiming for a latency of less than 15 seconds, and in the end, the vast majority of transactions had an include time of less than 10 seconds,” he explained. According to the Starknet team, higher performance and faster inclusion would pave the way for faster DeFi applications. This also means that AAA-rated games will be more realistic within the network.

Eli Ben-Sasson, co-founder and chairman of StarkWare, told Cointelegraph that this means the community is basically getting a “supercharged power tool.” With this, they will suddenly be able to build things that were not possible until now.

The executive also highlighted the short- and long-term effects of the new development. “Almost overnight, it will make DeFi faster and less clunky, and it will make gaming on-chain much more seamless. In the long term, it will lead to new and creative projects that will transform the way we interact with technology and with each other,” he explained.
