EU-US Hold Fourth Joint Technology Competition Policy Dialogue

Today, Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan, Justice Department Antitrust Division Deputy Attorney General Jonathan Kanter, and European Commission Executive Vice President Margrethe Vestager met in Washington for the fourth meeting of the EU-US Joint Dialogue on technological competition policy ( TCPD) to continue working on cooperation to guarantee and promote fair competition in the digital economy.

โ€œAs companies move at breakneck speed to build and monetize artificial intelligence and algorithmic decision-making tools, it will be especially critical to engage with our international partners and share best practices,โ€ said FTC Chair Lina M. Khan. "The Joint Technology Dialogue provides US agencies and the European Commission with a key opportunity to discuss emerging threats in a rapidly evolving digital economy."

โ€œThe growth of data monopolies and the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence amplify the competitive threats we face from dominant digital gatekeepers,โ€ said Jonathan Kanter, Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. "Sharing best practices with our global counterparts helps us more effectively serve the American people, and we deeply appreciate the European Commission's continued commitment through the TCPD."

โ€œWith today's meeting, we have further strengthened our cooperation on competition policy and enforcement in the area of โ€‹โ€‹technology. The rapidly evolving technology sector poses global challenges, such as those related to artificial intelligence and cloud computing in general. It is essential to anticipate and address these challenges through close cooperation, drawing on our respective experiences for the benefit of consumers and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic,โ€ said Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of competition policy. .

The dialogue focused on rapidly evolving technologies in the digital sector, such as artificial intelligence and cloud, ensuring that the implementation of mergers takes into account the realities of the modern digital economy, and recent developments related to the application of the law involving technological platforms, among other topics.

The United States and the European Commission also discussed the evolution of Big Tech companies' business strategies, including recent investments and partnerships between major cloud providers and artificial intelligence providers, as well as their implications for law enforcement.

The three authorities have agreed on the importance of continuing their close collaboration within the framework of the TCPD to guarantee fair competition in the technology sector. The TCPD will continue with high-level meetings, as well as regular discussions at a more technical level.
