Following the Great Lakes Spirit Seekers on a spooky investigation

MUSKEGON, Mich. โ€” Some people are made for excitement.

Take storm chasers, who head straight into action during a severe weather event.

A group in western Michigan does something similar, but instead of storms, they track spirits.

Introducing yourself to the Great Lakes Spirit Seekers.

โ€œWe are a paranormal team based in West Michigan,โ€ said co-founder Sondra Hoffmeyer.

Hoffmeyer and Candi Hess, the other co-founder, explained that they created the group three years ago.

"We had both been on other teams in the past and decided we wanted to do this on our own and form our own team," Hoffmeyer said.

The team has grown to eight people with one goal: to investigate the possibility of paranormal activity in the spookiest places in West Michigan.

How haunted is West Michigan, you might ask?

"A lot," Hoffmeyer said. "We've had a lot of personal experiences in West Michigan, as well as places we've gone that have had activity."

He added that โ€œreal interactions in terms of seeing spirits and things are really very rare. But people will see shadows or different things from a corner, they will hear things.โ€

Hoffmeyer and Hess said most of the evidence they have collected has been collected by their team.

FOX 17 accompanied the group's most recent investigation at Torrent House in Muskegon, a former 31-room mansion built by John Torrent, a logger and three-term mayor of Muskegon, who died inside the house.

Since then, it has been transformed into a funeral home, mortuary and hospital.

Today it houses an extension of the Hackley Library, but, as the story goes, the stories within come from more than just the books on the shelves.
