Freak weather hits the island

This morning a massive cleaning operation was carried out in the Balearic Islands, after three days of heavy rains.

The Met Office in Palma said that there is no new bad weather warnings which will come as a relief after nearly torrential rains wreaked havoc on the island from Santanyi to Sóller.

Extreme weather on the SE of Mallorca

Emergency services responded to hundreds of distress calls and were even called in to rescue people from their cars after getting caught in the flood water.

Extreme weather in the south-east of Mallorca

In some parts of the island more than 140 liters of rain have fallen per square meter. Local authorities will again be under pressure to ensure that there are adequate drainage systems in all areas.

Palma's Met Office has said that the sun should replace the rain this weekend.
