Germanyโ€™s historic floods followed by torrent of bulky waste

07/21/2021 -

As residents of German cities affected by last week's record flooding excavate their homes and businesses, the region's waste management companies struggle to cope with an increase in bulky waste. Workers at ART, the waste management association established by local authorities in the Trier region, are working overtime to clear the streets of flooded waste now that the floodwaters have receded. In just the first three days of operations, 14,000 tons of bulky waste had been collected in 60 of its member municipalities, ART said.

The 500 member municipalities of the waste management association typically generate around 12,000 tons of bulky waste in a whole year. And there is no end in sight. It is still impossible at this stage to provide a serious estimate of the amount of bulky debris that will be generated within the flood area in western Germany.

"Our people are really very motivated," ART spokeswoman Kirsten Kielholtz told EUWID, noting that some employees were working to the point of exhaustion. "At the same time, we are receiving an incredible amount of help," said Ms. Kielholtz. ART partner companies are actively assisting with the cleanup work. In some places, farmers were also helping out and removing bulky waste with their tractors.

The waste is temporarily stored in the organization's landfill, after the removal of hazardous materials and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The final destination of the material has not yet been decided, according to ART. Potential contamination renders wood waste unsuitable for material recycling or energy recovery in biomass power plants and therefore the sudden appearance of massive amounts of bulky waste is not expected to disrupt the market German largest wood waste.
