Governor Hochul Announces Launch of New York Mobile ID

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles launched New York Mobile ID, a highly secure digital version of a driver's license, learner's permit or state-issued ID on a smartphone. Mobile ID is a voluntary product designed for the convenience and security of New Yorkers and is available for IOS and Android users. Anyone who has a valid state-issued driver's license, learner's permit, or non-driver ID can download the secure Mobile ID app through Google Play or the App Store.

"We are thrilled to provide New Yorkers with access to this cutting-edge technology that provides convenience and greater security to Mobile ID users and those who accept it." Governor Hochul said. "Not only will New Yorkers be able to quickly show their IDs, but they will also have control over the personal information they share."

Through a partnership with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the New York Mobile ID (MiD) will be accepted at TSA security checkpoints at nearly 30 participating airports nationwide, including all terminals at LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports. This will allow New Yorkers to easily and securely verify their identity for airport security checkpoints.

DMV Commissioner Mark JF Schroeder said: โ€œEverything is on your cell phone these days and now your ID can be too. This is a cool way to provide identification without having to dig through your wallet or bag to find your physical document. Instead of handing over your physical ID with lots of personal information, mobile ID gives you greater control over the personal data you share.โ€

TSA Federal Security Director for LaGuardia Airport, Robert Duffy, said: โ€œWe are pleased to be able to add this next-generation digital ID to the list of acceptable IDs at our security checkpoints. Travelers who want to take advantage of this new capability will find their New York mobile driver's license a convenient option when going through the security process.โ€

Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton said: โ€œThe $8 billion investment to transform LaGuardia Airport is paying off in every way with an improved customer experience and national and global recognition. From the curb to the plane, we're working with our partners to provide our customers with a world-class experience. โ€œSecurity checkpoints are one of the main topics raised in our customer surveys, and the integration of new technologies such as mobile ID helps speed up the screening process and creates a more positive and hassle-free travel experience.โ€

New York Mobile ID is private and secure

New York Mobile ID offers a convenient, contactless and highly secure method to verify identity, while protecting personal information and privacy. To achieve the highest level of privacy and security, the New York MiD is not designed to resemble an image of a New York driver's license, learner's permit, or non-driver ID on a smartphone, and is not designed to be displayed or handed to a verifier to obtain credential information visually.

Personal information held in the MiD is encrypted and can only be accessed when the Mobile ID holder agrees to share it. It is transmitted to a verifier over a secure digital connection so the user never has to hand over their phone. The user also controls what data to share. For example, when a mobile ID is used, wherever it is accepted, to make an age-restricted purchase, such as purchasing tobacco or alcohol, the holder of a mobile ID can prove their age without sharing any other unnecessary information such as their name, height or direction. .

The MiD app can only be unlocked using Face ID, TouchID, or a six-digit PIN. Usage information, including where, when, and what personal information you have shared, is encrypted and stored only on your personal device. The New York Mobile ID does not store or transmit data about when and where it is used.

New York Mobile ID also allows the DMV to send updates to the app when information is updated directly with the DMV, such as a change of address or a change in someone's driving status. This gives verifiers the confidence of knowing that the identity information they accept is authentic and up-to-date.
