The UK's leading health organizations are demanding an end to the abuse suffered by health workers during the pandemic and calling on the public to join them.

His stance was triggered by the trolling suffered by Royal College of Midwives RCM CEO Gill Walton after her work convincing pregnant women to get vaccinated against Covid-19.

He faced a torrent of abuse online, as did many other prominent doctors working to drive uptake of the jab among younger age groups.

A selection of tweets captured by RCM compared Ms. Walton and other nurses to the serial killer Myra Hindley and the Nazis.

Elsewhere, President of the UK Medical Association and Good morning Great Britain Regular doctor Samantha Batt-Rawdon said she had also had to block dozens of accounts.

She tweeted: โ€œI'm so sorry, but I had to start blocking people. @Twitter should be a safe space for doctors to talk about the importance of vaccination, but all we have recovered is a wall of abuse.

"Frankly, this is the last thing we all need right now."

A letter on how to deal with abuse written by the RCM and signed by organizations including Unison the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the NHS Confederation, the British Medical Association and the Royal College of Nursing It will be published in The Times on Wednesday.

The abusive tweets directed at Ms. Walton led to a social media counter-campaign under the hashtag #IStandWithGill.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid was one of those who condemned the actions of Covid-19 skeptics and the anti-vaccine movement.

He posted: โ€œI am shocked to see the abuse directed at @GillWaltonRCM and her colleagues at @MidwivesRCM.
