Hong Kong cryptocurrency firm loses US$200 million to hackers

Hackers stole around $200 million from cryptocurrency company Mixin early Saturday, the company said on social media platform of the year.

Mixin, which lists its location on LinkedIn as Hong Kong, said its network's cloud service provider's database was "attacked by hackers, resulting in the loss of some assets" and that "the funds involved amount to approximately 200 million dollars."

Mixin describes itself as a network for transferring digital assets. It has a million users, according to its website.

It said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that it had stopped allowing users to withdraw their funds from the network, but that transfers were not affected and that services will reopen once the vulnerabilities are fixed.

Mixin will announce a solution on "how to deal with lost assets," he said.

Valued at $200 million, the hack would be the 10th largest cryptocurrency hack of all time, by volume of cryptocurrency stolen, and the largest yet in 2023, according to blockchain research firm Elliptic.

Last year, hackers stole cryptocurrencies worth up to $3.8 billion, making them worst year on recordaccording to blockchain researchers Chainalysis.
