The spectral steed Torrent is an important character in Elden Ring, both for story and utility reasons. Moving through the vast spaces of The Lands Between on a fast mount makes the difficult game that much easier, so here's how to summon his horse in the Elden Ring.
The best ways to summon Torrent in Elden Ring
If you're on the right path to the Elden Ring, then you'll need to equip the Spectral Steed Whistle and activate it to summon Torrent. If this is your first time entering The Lands Between, you will have to go through a few obstacles before you can use your majestic steed.
How to unblock torrent
To unlock your spectral steed, you'll first need to follow a fairly linear path until you first exit onto the green fields of Limgrave. Here you will see a ruined church and a large knight on horseback in the distance. Escape from him and head to the area marked on the map. There will be a place of grace near a great gate and a town in ruins.
Rest in the place of grace and you will be received by Melina. Listen to her dialogue and then accept her proposal. At the end of the conversation, you will receive the Spectral Steed Whistle and unlock access to Torrent.

Equip the Spectral Steed Whistle
Once you have Melina's item, head over to her menu and select gear. In the quick items section near the bottom of the screen, you will be able to select a slot and equip the Spectral Steed Whistle. You can now return to the game and cycle through your quick items to activate the whistle and summon Torrent. However, there is an easier way to ensure that your horse is only two buttons away.
Using the item bag
This is my preferred way to summon Torrent and is also useful for Flasks of Crimson Tears, Cerulean Tears, and Wonderous Physick.
Open your menu and navigate to the right hand side where there is a section called Stocks. Here you can select four items that can be quickly accessed at any time. Select your desired slot and equip the Spectral Steed Whistle, then return to the game.
You can now hold Y or Triangle to open the bag and press the corresponding directional button to use an item. On mouse and keyboard, this is bound to E and the arrow keys, which is less useful.
With this setup, you can activate Torrent right away, regardless of what item you have in your quick item slots.
Reviving Torrent in Combat
If Torrent dies while dueling a dragon or trying to defeat the Night Cavalry, you can still bring him back for a quick escape or to chase down enemies. Try to summon Torrent again and you will be asked if you want to spend a Flask of Crimson Tears to resurrect him. This can be a tough choice as those limited healing items can be the difference between a decisive victory and a frustrating death, but the choice is always there.
