Zarah Sultana delivers speech on Islamophobia

A Labor MP broke down in tears while delivering a speech as she recounted the torrent of Islamophobic abuse she has received since she became a politician.

Zarah Sultana, a Coventry South MP, said she received messages calling her a "terrorist sympathizer" and "a cancer wherever you go, and soon Europe will vomit you out."

The 27-year-old from West Midlands delivered her emotional speech at a debate in Westminster Hall on the definition of Islamophobia.

"Before being elected, I was nervous about being a Muslim woman in the public eye," she said.

Growing up, I had seen the abuse that prominent British Muslims were subjected to. I knew he was not going to give me an easy path.

"And when young women ask me what it is like, I would like to say that I was wrong to be concerned. That they would face the same challenges as their non-Muslim friends and colleagues. But in my short time in Parliament, that is not my experience."

She added: "I have discovered that being a Muslim woman, being outspoken and left-wing, is being subjected to this barrage of racism and hatred."

It is to be treated by some as if I were an enemy of the country in which I was born, as if I did not belong.

And he did not stop to criticize the Work and Conservative Party.

Ms. Sultanah said the abuse would get worse when she called Tony blair for launching an "illegal war" and spoke for those left behind in Afghanistan.

He argued that โ€œthis Islamophobia does not come from a vacuum. It is not natural or ingrained. It is taught from above. "

He highlighted the cases he had faced from Conservative MPs, including, he said, โ€œWhen a far-right online account attacked me with racist abuse, suggesting that Muslims were an invading army, a Conservative MP responded by calling them not for their racism, but for insulting me. "

The MP continued: โ€œIslamophobia is very real in Britain today. That is something I know very well. But it cannot be defeated in isolation.

โ€œThe people who spread this hatred are not just targeting Muslims. They attack blacks, Jews, gypsy, Roma and nomadic communities, migrants and refugees.

"There is security in solidarity, and only by uniting our struggles will we defeat racism."

Introducing the debate, Conservative Peterborough MP Paul Bristow said: โ€œThis cannot wait, absent any action, the APPG definition has been adopted by dozens of councils and the Scottish and Welsh governments are considering this.

โ€œThe frustration is growing. A definition has the potential to be a tremendous force for good and I know the Government will recognize this.

"It is absolutely brilliant that the government has reconciled this.

"It is the first step in a nationwide effort to eradicate this disease and improve outcomes for millions of people across the country.

"I cannot sit idly by and allow the children and grandchildren of my constituents to face the same discrimination that their grandparents and parents faced in their lives."

Communities Minister Eddie Hughes said: "We remain committed to a strong and effective definition and will outline our steps to achieve this in due course."
