Landslide damages 6 houses in Thane’s Kalwa

Thane: After a landslide on Saturday night that damaged six houses in Indira Nagar near Kalwa, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) evacuated around 20 to 25 nearby houses as a safety and precautionary measure.

According to TMC's regional disaster management cell, the incident took place in Ma Kali Chawl, Indira nagar slum near East Kalwa around 11pm. All the tenants have illegally built houses on the slopes of the hills, which are dangerous. "The residents were alerted after some stones rolled into their shed. They all came out and saw huge stones fall and completely damage all six houses. No one was injured when they left their house," Santosh Kadam said. head of the regional disaster management cell, Thane.

After the incident, Kalwa Police Station officers together with RDMC, firefighters arrived at the scene. "As a precautionary measure, we evacuated the nearest 20 or 25 houses. They were all on the edge or on the side of the hills and were risking their lives for any great tragedy. We transferred them to a TMC school in Gholai nagar in Kalwa. Meanwhile , the six houses that were damaged by the landslide were demolished ”, added Kadam.

On July 19, heavy rains caused a landslide in Kalwa. Debris had fallen on two huts in the Gholai Nagar slum, killing five and wounding two others.

After the July incident, the Thane Forest Department conducted a survey and found around 1,300 cabins on the slopes, all dangerous. The survey for more than 15 days in slums in Parik Nagar, Gholai nagar, Indira Nagar, Bhaskar Nagar, Kargil area, among others. Last week, the forest department had also notified some 32 dangerous huts. The forest authorities gave details to the TMC and Torrent Electricity to cut off the water and electricity supply.
