Focus Verses for Today: Luke 6:46-49

Today our journey takes us through Luke chapters 5 and 6, covering a wide range of topics including healing, the calling of the apostles, teaching, the beatitudes, and parables.

Before we begin our journey today, please take some time to stop and pray. Seek God's wisdom for today's reading. Read Luke 5-6. Let's travel!

Luke 5-6: Our reading today from the Gospel of Luke begins with Jesus calling his first disciples, after preaching from a fishing boat on Lake Gennesaret. Jesus heals a leper and forgives and heals a paralytic (much to the disgust of the Pharisees). Jesus calls Levi to discipleship and dines with sinners. Jesus heals on the Sabbath, further threatening the traditions and customs of the Pharisees. Jesus calls his apostles, his closest associates. Jesus gives the message known as The Beatitudes. Our reading today concludes with three parables. (Luke 5:1-6:49)

One of those parables is our focus verse for today:

46 โ€œWhy do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I tell you? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show them what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent hit that house but couldn't shake it, because it was well built. 49 But whoever hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on earth without a foundation. The moment the torrent hit that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete."
(Luke 6:46-49, NIV)

Luke made it clear that anyone who calls Jesus Lord must conform his life to the teachings of Jesus. People often claim to be followers of a person or movement and only embrace the principles that do not interfere with the way they want to live. That's not true tracking. Jesus said:

15 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
(Revelation 3:15-16, NIV)

Is it possible to be a true follower of Jesus without governing our lives by the principles of life that Jesus taught?

God blessed!
