Maharashtra: Thousands take to streets in Bhiwandi against pvt power company | Thane News โ€“ Times of India

BHIWANDI: Locals and members of different political parties leaders from city together on Friday hold huge morcha against a private Torrent Power Company which looks after supplies, maintenance of and collection of electricity bills in Bhiwandi city and Bhiwandi rural areas.
The protest was organised under the banner of Mahavikas Sangharsh Samiti. Thousands from the city and rural areas participated in the protest wearing black bands in their hands.
The police had not given permission for the protest and notices were issued to many important functionaries of Mahavikas Sangharsh Samiti despite that the morcha was taken out under the leadership of Mahavikas Sangharsh Samiti president and former MLA Rupesh Mhatre.
Due to this protest, there was a huge traffic jam on the main and internal roads of the city. In order to prevent any untoward incident heavy police force was deployed.
"We have come together to fight against the arbitrary management of the Torrent company in the city and rural areas which charges high electricity bills, forceful collection of electricity bills, filing false cases against citizens regarding electricity theft and many other such things," Mhatre alleged.
The samiti warned that if their demand for removal of the company from Bhiwandi are not met, they will next hold protest outside Thane collector office.
However, Torrent Power company officials in their statement said, โ€œWe function as franchise of MSEDCL for Bhiwandi and Mumbra-Kalwa area and we are bound by the regulation of MSEDCL and we charged electricity fare as per their guidelines.โ€
The statement further stated that the allegation was baseless that company file false cases our vigilance team only act against those who indulge in power theft.
