Michelle Mone and husband Doug Barrowman receive ‘death threats’ and claim they are being made a scapegoat by ‘government media spin’ | TalkTV

Baroness Mone's husband said his family has been “treated like a punching bag” over ministers’ “regrettable failures” to procure personal protective equipment (PPE) during the pandemic.

In a statement published by Lady Mone on PPE company Medpro.

Lady Mone has admitted she lied when she denied having any connections with the company, a consortium led by her husband, which was awarded contracts worth more than £200m.

Mr Barrowman's statement was posted on his wife's X account.

Barrowman said he and his family have "received death threats and a constant stream of online and other abuse."

Barrowman said: "Michelle and I are hanging on to distract from the government's incompetence in how it handled the procurement of PPE."

She will benefit from £60m in profits placed in trust by her husband.

Barrowman said he and his family have “received death threats and a constant stream of online and other abuse” as a result of the dispute.

In his statement, Mr Barrowman focused the debate on what he said were failings by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) during the procurement of PPE.

“Michelle and I are being left hanging to distract from the government's incompetence in how it handled the procurement of PPE at a time of national emergency,” he said.

“Medpro supplied the Government with 1.5% of PPE spending (£202m) against a total of £13.1bn and yet the media or the Government refuse to focus on the other 98.5% of PPE supplied; much of which was defective or never used and/or supplied in circumstances identical to those of the Medpro contracts.”

“The stark reality is that DHSC has brought this claim against Medpro at a time of heightened scrutiny over how it overspent so much and when questions were being asked about why the Government was writing off £9bn of PPE out of the £13.1bn millions spent,” he said.

Sir Keir Starmer has called for Lady Mone to be expelled from the House of Lords after admitting she lied about her links to Medpro.

During an interview with the BBC, Baroness Mone admitted lying about her links to Medpro

“How on earth did the UK government manage to buy five years of PPE when it was only supposed to build up four months' worth of stock?

“Yet no one has been held accountable at the DHSC. His boss, Sir Chris Wormald (DHSC permanent secretary), should resign as he ultimately signed all the PPE contracts.

"So, instead of focusing on the real story, it suits the government's agenda and its media to make my wife and I scapegoats for our regrettable failures."

Last December, the Government launched breach of contract proceedings against PPE Medpro over the 2020 agreement on the supply of sterile gowns. The firm defends the legal action.

The company is also being investigated by the National Crime Agency (NCA) for alleged criminal offenses in the procurement of PPE contracts.

Barrowman repeated his claim that ministers were “using the arm of the NCA to threaten criminal proceedings unless we resolve” the civil case.

Barrowman claimed its prices were so competitive it saved the government £100m on masks and gowns.

Mr. Barrowman's new statement appears to have been prompted by an article that tax expert Dan Neidle is preparing to publish.

Neidle speculated that any failure by Barrowman to inform Companies House about his role in PPE Medpro could be considered a criminal offence.

He wrote in

“Business Chambers, the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) and the police have options.

“Prosecute Barrowman and his team for an infringement that was both egregious and shocking. Or be prepared for absolutely everyone to ignore these rules. Because there may not be rules that are never applied.”
