Netflix VPN crackdown is shutting out regular users

If you are a Netflix user who likes the flexibility of accessing libraries in different countries, this will probably be more difficult for you.

The streaming giant goes further with its efforts to prevent users from accessing the service via VPN and proxy servers to bypass geo-restrictions.

A report from Torrent freak This week it says that Netflix is โ€‹โ€‹starting to block residential IP addresses as well as business IPs. VPN providers have started using residential addresses to trick Netflix into believing that no illicit access is taking place.

Now the company seems to be fully on the ground and making life more difficult for Americans who want to access some of the UK's best comedies through a VPN, for example.

However, due to increased Netflix activity, many people now see "missing content" messages even when accessing the service in their own homes, without using a VPN. Some of these users can only access Netflix Originals, which are available in all territories.

One VPN service in particular, WeVPN told Torrent Freak that every day users are becoming "collateral damage" as Netflix blacklist IPs suspected of being used by VPN companies.

"The collateral damage is that you have hundreds of thousands of legitimate residential Netflix subscribers blocked from accessing Netflix's full home country catalog from home," said a WeVPN spokesperson.

Netflix says it is working with users to restore lost content and also confirmed that it is blocking everything but Netflix original content for those suspected of using VPN and proxy services to access the streaming library. So, if you're hoping to catch up with misbehaving men from the US, you're probably out of luck.
