New Year’s Eve rail strikes to go ahead, say union leaders

Strikes by rail workers and catering staff in two separate disputes will continue into New Years eve union leaders have confirmed.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) Union on cross-country trains and catering staff based at Edinburgh Waverley Station will walk for 24 hours.

The dispute in Cross Country involves train managers and senior conductors lining up on the role of the guards.

The action at Edinburgh Waverley, by staff employed by Gate Gourmet, is part of a long-standing dispute over allegations of bullying.

RMT Secretary General Mick Lynch said: “The disruption of services in the wake of the New Years strike is entirely due to these greedy private companies from our railways seeking to squeeze every last penny that they can by pushing the security, the employment and the dignity of the workplace.

“Our Cross Country and Gate Gourmet members are standing up for all railroad workers as we expect a torrent of attacks on jobs, wages, safety, pensions and working conditions in 2022. We are ready for a New Year of campaigning and action. on all fronts. "

Cross Country said it expected disruptions to its services, adding that it could only run a "very limited" schedule.

A statement read: "We are advising clients to modify their plans whenever possible and avoid traveling on December 31."
