Pee Dee sheriff’s office warns people of scams involving Bitcoin ATMs

DILLON COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – The Dillon County Sheriff’s Office is sending out a warning to neighbors about scammers using Bitcoin ATMs to steal money.

The sheriff’s office said it’s seen an uptick in reports where people have sent money through Bitcoin ATMs.

In one case, the scammer called the victim and claimed to be in law enforcement. The caller spoofed their phone number and made it appear as if it was coming from the Dillon County Detention Center.

The caller stated they were an FBI agent and that the victim had arrest warrants in Georgia where she missed a grand jury appointment. They also went as far as to send fake copies of a federal arrest warrant.

The victim was told to stay on the phone until she went to a location where there was an ATM and she sent the scammers money through a Bitcoin ATM.

It’s important to note police departments and sheriff’s offices will never contact a person by phone and ask them to send any by Bitcoin.

They also won’t call you by phone and threaten to arrest a person if they don’t send money while they’re on the phone.

The Dillon County Sheriff’s Office said if you have any information on the cases, you’re asked to call them at 843-774-1432.

Or if you live in another area, you should contact your local police or sheriff’s office to report calls that you believe to be a scam.
