Portuguese town submerges in 2.2m liters of red wine

Online videos show a red downpour falling down a slope within the city, which has a population of around 2,000 people.

On Sunday, the streets of Sao Lorenco do Bairro in Portugal were flooded with red wine after an explosion of two wine tanks owned by a vineyard caused 2.2 million liters of red wine to spill into the small town.

Wine from the Levira distillery is enough to fill an Olympic-size swimming pool, forcing local officials to issue an environmental warning.

According to local media outlets published by USA Today on Monday, the Anadia Fire Department diverted the flow of wine to prevent contamination of the neighboring Certima River.

According to the New York Post, the wine spilled into a nearby field. The publication quoted firefighters as saying that the basement of a house near the distillery was flooded with wine.

Levira Distillery posted a message on Facebook on Monday expressing "deep regret" over the incident and noting that authorities are investigating its cause. No injuries have been reported and the distillery has agreed to cover all costs related to cleanup and restoration.

The distillery revealed to the New York Post that wine-soaked soil in the field was moved to a specialized treatment facility.
