The 300,000 dollars Remington Trampoline Mile, Remington Park's top event for 2-year-olds, attracted nine participants. A trio of runners are barely separated by morning favoritism for next Friday's main card.
The Springboard Mile is a qualifying points race for the 2024 Kentucky Derby, offering 10-5-3-2-1 points to the top five finishers and headlining a 10-race schedule with five other races in play.
Otto the Conqueror is the slight favorite on the morning line at 5-2 odds for horse racing's all-time leading trainer, Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen. The 2-year-old colt by Street Sense has won two consecutive races at Churchill Downs. Both victories came over seven furlongs, with the last on a sloppy surface on 29 October. In that subsidy event, Otto The Conqueror defeated Honor Marie by four lengths. Honor Marie won the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill on November 25.
Otto The Conqueror will be ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, who won the October 29 triumph.
Raging Torrent will be shipped to Remington Park from Southern California and is expected to arrive Monday. Trainer Doug O'Neill has already won the Kentucky Derby twice, with Nyquist in 2016 and I'll Have Another in 2012. Raging Torrent is the second choice in the 3-1 morning line odds and has been Signed up to go with a Lights Out Gear Change.
Raging Torrent broke his maiden at first asking in July at Del Mar. O'Neill immediately entered him in his first graded race, the Best Pal Stakes (G3), in which he finished third, beaten by 8 3/4 lengths.
That did not deter O'Neill and his owners' confidence in the colt. Raging Torrent returned to compete in two Grade 1s, the Del Mar Futurity and the American Pharoah. He finished fourth in both, adding blinkers in the final race. Jockey Antonio Fresu is the only rider to have ridden Raging Torrent up to this point and will also ride him on Springboard.
Glengarry will travel to Oklahoma City from Oaklawn to make his springboard attempt. He is the third option in the morning line with odds of 7-2. Undefeated in three starts and trained by Doug Anderson, Glengarry broke his maiden by 5 3/4 lengths in the first question on August 28 at Prairie Meadows. Glengarry followed the first race with an even more impressive 12 3/4 length victory on September 30 in the Iowa Cradle Stakes.
Jockey Ken Tohill was in the saddle for the first two wins. His third trip to the winner's circle was only a half-length, but it may have been his most impressive yet. He came in at Keeneland against open company in the Bowman Mill Stakes with jockey Luis Saez replacing Tohill. In three starts, Glengarry has earned $177,501 for his three wins, both leading the Springboard field. Saez will keep the saddle at Glengarry.
Magic Grant is the top local Springboard winner by virtue of his score in the $75,000 Clever Trevor Stakes at Remington Park on October 27. Trained by Eddie Milligan Jr., the colt broke his maiden by winning the Clever Trevor. Richard Eramia maintains control over Magic Grant, who is 8-1 in the morning line.
