Samsung Hack Allegedly Leaks Confidential Source Code, Biometric Algorithm

The Samsung hack allegedly leaked the South Korean tech giant's confidential source code and biometric unlock algorithm, data extortion group Lapsus$ has claimed.

Hack Samsung

According to a news computer ringing, Lapsus$ said it leaked up to 190GB of Samsung data and source code online after hacking into the South Korea-based tech company's systems.

The extortion gang initially posted a teaser, saying it would be leaking Samsung data, in which Lapsus$ attached a screenshot of the tech giant's software code.

After the initial teaser, the extortion group went on to post a description, outlining which Samsung data has allegedly been breached.

Lapsus$ said the description of the leak included "Samsung's confidential source code," which the extortion group claims came from the leak.

To be more precise, the Samsung hack allegedly contained the source code for the tech giant's TrustZone environment Trusted Applet, which they use for access control, hardware cryptography, and binary encryption.

In addition to that, the breach also included the confidential source code of the American technology company Qualcomm, which supplies chipsets for Samsung smartphones.

The hack also allegedly included the boot app source code for all new Samsung devices, as well as the source code for the tech giant's activation services.

Furthermore, the extortion gang also claimed that the massive Samsung hack also contained the full source code for the tech giant's authorization and authentication technology for their accounts.

Furthermore, the hackers also claimed that they have the algorithms that Samsung uses for all of its biometric unlocking features.

Bleeping Computer added in the same report that the extortion gang, Lapsus$, who were also responsible for the recent Nvidia hack, already leaked all of this in a 190GB zip file.

Samsung's leaked bulk data has been compressed into three files, which are currently available for download via torrent.

The media outlet also noted that the torrent of the hacked data itself is very popular and already has numerous downloads.

Samsung hackers and ransom

At the time of writing, Lapsus$ has yet to announce whether it ever asked the South Korean tech giant for any ransom before leaking its data.

It's worth noting that the hacking group has asked Nvidia for an unusual ransom following its data breach, according to a recent report from The edge.

The Lapsus$ group has specifically asked Nvidia to open the source code of your GPU drivers. On top of that, the hackers also wanted the tech giant to remove the crypto mining nerf for its 30-series GPUs.
