Abu Dhabi: A 5-year-old boy drowned on Saturday after being swept away by a torrent in the Al Shu'ara Valley in Tihama Al Baha, the Red Sea coastal plain, while a 9-year-old boy accompanying him was rescued, officials said.

The children were heading home behind the valley when the tragedy occurred.

The eldest was able to hang from a tree in the valley, while the torrent swept away the youngest. Immediately, the Civil Defense at the Al Shu'ara Center and the Qilwa Governorate moved to the site, and the diving teams recovered the boy's body, which was sent to a government hospital for a post-mortem report.
