South Korea embraces the proto-Metaverse

The South Korean people and a growing number of the country's top companies have begun to embrace and integrate the Metaverse into their everyday lives in new and unexpected ways.

Two major retailers in the country have recently introduced Metaverse and AI elements for shoppers to improve their shopping experience.

GS Shop introduced home shopping through Metaverse on November 16 showing the inner workings of a food production facility. Their goal was to reassure customers about the quality of the facilities and the food that was for sale.

GS Shop converted the scans of the physical facility into 3D renderings. In this way, customers who had augmented reality (AR) devices, similar to those of haptic gloves Meta previewed this week, they were able to tour the facilities in the virtual world to see the conditions in which their food was produced.

Jason Ye, co-founder of multi-chain ecosystem developer DeSpread, has noticed the explosion of companies joining the Metaverse in Korea. "It seems like every company is diving into Metaverse and Play to Earn these days," he told Cointelegraph.

โ€œKorea has a lot of huge IPs. If you can combine those IPs with great content around you, you can create a great business model. Attractive content is the basis for entering the Metaverse. "

Metaverse and AI (artificial intelligence) avatars are popping up in various industries, including retail shopping, finance, and even utilities.

Lotte Home Shopping, which spearheaded $ 14 billion in sales in 2020, introduced Lucy, a virtual model to help promote the brand's products. Lotte will be using Lucy in future video content and on social media, as the avatar has her own Instagram account. It is also very likely that Lotte will integrate Lucy into her Metaverse-based virtual store.

The deployment of virtual reality has also spread to the public sector. The Seoul city government announced on November 6 that it planned to build its Metaverse platform for 2023, where residents can file civil petitions.

The provisionally called 'Metaverse 120 Center' will take care of virtual visits that do not require the physical presence of the visitor.

On November 10, the Korean military announced that it would gradually introduce Metaverse applications into soldier training programs by the 2030s.
