South Koreaโ€™s military says North Korea fired ballistic missile toward its eastern waters

South Korea's military said Sunday it had detected North Korea firing at least one ballistic missile into its eastern waters, adding to a spate of weapons tests in recent months that has raised tensions.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff did not immediately say what type of missile it was or how far it flew.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are at their highest point in years, and both the pace of North Korea's weapons demonstrations and South Korea's combined military exercises with Japan are intensifying in a tit-for-tat cycle.

The weapons North Korea tested this year included intercontinental ballistic missiles that demonstrated potential range to reach the continental United States and a series of launch events that the North described as simulated nuclear strikes against targets in South Korea.
