Statement by Acting Secretary Su on first contract between United Steelworkers, Blue Bird Corp.

WASHINGTON โ€“ Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su today issued the following statement regarding news of a final contractual agreement between United Steelworkers and Blue Bird Corp, one of the nation's leading manufacturers of low- and zero-emission school buses.

โ€œCongratulations to United Steelworkers and Blue Bird for their dedication and perseverance in achieving a first contract. As President Biden and I have said, collective bargaining works. This agreement is proof positive that when workers and employers sit at the negotiating table together, they can reach an agreement that achieves stability for the employer and better, safer conditions for its workers.

โ€œToo often, employers resort to harmful delaying tactics to undermine workers' voice and avoid entering into a first contract with a newly formed union. This historic agreement is an example of collective bargaining done well. I applaud United Steelworkers and Blue Bird for demonstrating the power and benefits of worker voice.

โ€œI also want to recognize both parties for their leadership, reinforcing that the transition to electric vehicles and good union jobs go hand in hand. Through these negotiations, United Steelworkers and Blue Bird Corp. are charting a future where union workers, road companies and clean energy keep our country running. This progress will benefit your workers, your company and our country.โ€
