Nicholas landed in the eastern part of the Matagorda Peninsula and was soon downgraded to a tropical cyclone. According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, it was about 15 miles south-southwest of Houston, with a maximum wind speed of 60 miles per hour at 7 a.m. Tuesday. Nicholas was the 14th named storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season.

Galveston saw nearly 14 inches of rain from Nicholas, while Houston reported more than 6 inches of rain. This is just part of the rain that fell during Harvey, which rained more than 60 inches in four days in southeast Texas.

The storm was expected to move northeast at 8 mph, with downtown Nicholas moving slowly into southeast Texas Tuesday and southwest Louisiana Wednesday.

In other news: Nicholas was fortified by a Category 1 hurricane before landing along the Texas coast.
