People search for valuable items in a pile of rubbish dumped in the Flower Meadow on May 15, 2023, in Gulmarg, west of Srinagar, Indian administered Kashmir, India. Gulmarg, also known as the 'flower meadow', is home to the world's highest golf course and a cable car that reaches heights of over 4,000 metres. Ski enthusiasts flock to this mountainous region during the winter months to take advantage of the powder snow. In the summer, however, the resort is flooded with tourists seeking clean, refreshing air due to the high temperatures in India. Many of these visitors leave behind a significant amount of waste, causing serious ecological threats and endangering the villagers who depend on the glacial waters. Trash accumulation poses a serious danger to delicate alpine ecology, as well as to communities that depend on glacier-fed streams for their water supply. There are no restrictions on bringing food and water up the mountain, despite signs along the trail reminding people that plastic is prohibited. Environmental activists warn that all the waste generated in and around Gulmarg is dumped indiscriminately in the mountains. (Photo by Yawar Nazir/Getty Images)
