As we slowly approach the end of the year, our colleagues at the specialized site Torrent Freak have just published the ranking of the 10 most pirated series in 2023. As the media specifies, This classification is based on Bit-Torrent traffic. Although the platform is one of the most popular for pirating movies and series, it must be remembered that it represents a small part of the piracy landscape.
The Last of Us, the most pirated series in 2023
But precisely, which series won the not-so-coveted award for the most pirated program in 2023? According to data collected by Torrent Freak, the HBO series The Last of Us now occupies first place. The adaptation of Naughty Dog's cult game, starring mainly Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal, has stolen the throne from another HBO production, House of The Dragon, the spin-off of Game of Thrones.
Then we find in the rest of the podium other extremely popular series launched in 2023, but this time within another team: disney. Indeed, The Mandalorian, the Star Wars series broadcast by Disney+, obtains the silver medal with its third season, followed by the excellent second season of Loki, launched just a few weeks ago on the platform. In fourth place we find another Star Wars adventure, Ahsoka.
Let us remember in passing that Disney+ series have been in the ranking of the most pirated series for several years. Wandavision took pole position in 2020, before The Mandalorian came to steal the crown in 2021. As Torrent Freak points out, we see without much surprise that This ranking is dominated by series produced by streaming platforms.
Piracy as a resource in the face of the multiplication of platforms
Not in vain, in just a few years the offer in the streaming market has evolved at a dizzying pace. From netflix, Amazon Prime Video to Disney+, we also find other recent players such as Paramount+, HBO Max (not yet available in France), AppleTV+ or even OCS and Canal+ Series to name a few. If you want to see everything, and in particular the exclusives for each platform, the bill can quickly reach staggering amounts. Therefore, piracy seems to be an option chosen by many users.
Let us point out, however, that Netflix series are conspicuous by their absence in the ranking, suggesting that subscribers are still reluctant to get rid of their account, to the detriment of other services. However, things could change in 2024 with recent price increases on the platform and the elimination of the 10.99 euro formula in certain countries, including France.
