Thousands marooned as hill torrents flood parts of Dadu

HYDRABAD:

Seasonal streams of rainwater flowing from the Khirthar Mountains have flooded hundreds of villages in Dadu district, cutting off road communication between many villages, including the district's towns of Johi and Wahi Pandhi, local people told The Express Tribune. through phone calls on Saturday.

The water level in the Nai Gaj, a seasonal river, has touched the embankment that protects the city of Johi from flooding.

Local people have complained that they are facing a food shortage as food stocks in their homes have been flooded by the floods. They said that food prices in the local market have been inflated because road connectivity was cut off. People urged the government to help them.

They recalled that an embankment built to divert the stream from the Nai Gaj Dam had broken last year and has not been rehabilitated until now because water gushing from the mountain flowed into the tax instead of Lake Manchar.

The Nai Gaj Dam is an embankment dam currently under construction on the Nai Gaj River in the gorge area on the edge of the Kirthar mountain range.

Several large villages, including Drigh Bala, Sher Muhammmad Talpur, Bahawal Babbur, Jam Babbur, Fateh Brohi, Shafi Muhammad Loond, Qasim Rudnani, Ali Murad Shahni and others, have been partially submerged under water.

Mahesh Kumar, an irrigation official, confirmed to local media that the flow at the Nai Gaj dam was recorded at 25 feet on Friday. He said they had set up a camp near Haji Khan Mori to monitor the flow of water towards the embankment.

Johi's Assistant Commissioner Sahib Khan Loond said ships have been laid out on the FB embankment. "Many roads in Kacho [the mountain region in Dadu] they have been under water and part of the bridge connecting Johi to Wahi Pandhi has been damaged. Kacho has separated from Johi and Dadu. "

An official from the highway division, Gul Hassan Jamali, informed local media that they are cutting off a small part of the Wahi Pandhi highway to divert the water to Lake Manchar. Pakistan People's Party NAM Rafique Ahmed Jamali said that local administration and irrigation officials are dealing with the situation efficiently.
