Torrent Power ventures into a project to mix green hydrogen, the cleanest energy mix for the eyes.

Torrent Group's integrated power company, Torrent Power Limited, has embarked on a pioneering initiative for a greener future by beginning work on a pilot project to combine green hydrogen (GH2) with natural gas in its city gas distribution network (CGD).

The project, which is scheduled to be completed within eight months, represents a significant advance in Torrent Power's foray into the GH2 business in India, underscoring its commitment to fostering a cleaner and more sustainable energy mix.

The company said in a press release:

The ambitious pilot project, using an alkaline electrolyser, aims to blend approximately 2.5% GH2 in the CGD network, positioning it as one of the largest private sector blending initiatives in the country.

โ€œGH2, generated through the electrolysis of water powered by renewable sources, offers a gradual transition to a cleaner energy alternative when combined with existing natural gas supply,โ€ he added.

Torrent Power, leveraging its strong presence in the renewable energy sector, aims to emerge as a leading provider of end-to-end GH2 solutions for industrial and commercial players across India. The company's proactive approach towards integrating GH2 into its business operations resonates with its commitment to sustainability.

In addition, Torrent Power is actively exploring the development of export-oriented green ammonia, indicating its strong interest in several states and its enthusiasm to expand its green power portfolio.

Currently, Torrent Power has an installed power generation capacity of 4.1 GW, mainly from clean energy alternatives. Gas accounts for 2.7 GW of its capacity, while renewables, including solar and wind power generation, contribute 1.07 GW.

The company also has an additional 0.7 GW of renewable capacity in various stages of development, reflecting its concerted efforts to expand its renewable generation capacity in line with its sustainability goals and the government's vision of reaching 500 GW of renewable capacity. non-fossil fuels by 2030.

Torrent Power's commitment to green energy extends beyond the GH2 project, with efforts in pumped hydro storage and green hydrogen.

With a turnover of approximately Rs. Worth Rs 25 billion (approximately US$3 billion), Torrent Power operates as the integrated power company of the diversified Torrent Group. The group's overall revenue is around โ‚น37 000 crore (approximately US$4.45 billion) and it boasts a market capitalization of โ‚น75 000 crore (approximately US$9 billion).
