Turkish cryptocurrency tycoon gets more than 11,000 years in jail

The Turkish cryptocurrency CEO and his two brothers each received a sentence of 11,196 years in prison for defrauding investors of millions of dollars.

After his trade with Thodex fell through, Faruk Fatih Ozer, 29, fled to Albania. He was eventually deported to Turkey in June and found guilty of money laundering, fraud and organized crime.

Anadolu Agency quoted Ozer as saying: โ€œI am smart enough to lead any organization on Earth. This business, which I founded when I was 22, is proof of that.

His brother Guven and sister Serap were found guilty of the same charges at the Istanbul trial and received separate sentences for their numerous crimes against 2,027 victims, adding up to the total number of years of the verdict.

Bizarre prison sentences like these have become more common since Turkey abolished the death penalty in 2004.

Adnan Oktar, a television cult preacher, received an 8,658-year prison sentence in 2022 for fraud and sexual charges, along with ten of his followers.

Prosecutors in Ozer's case, according to AFP, had asked that he serve 40,562 years in prison.
