Twitch data breach resulted from server configuration error

Twitch Data Breach took place a couple of days ago when an anonymous hacker posted a torrent file with 125GB of data on the 4chan messaging board.

What reported by Hackread.comAmazon.com, Amazon.com's live-streaming esports platform Twitch was the victim of a massive data breach in which the company was reportedly hacked in its entirety.

According to the latest yourpdate from Twitch, the company believes that a mistaken change to the server settings allows unauthorized people to access and leak sensitive data.

โ€œWe have learned that some data was exposed to the Internet due to an error in a Twitch server configuration change that was subsequently accessed by a malicious third party. Our teams are working urgently to investigate the incident, โ€Twitch said in a blog post.

About the leak

On Wednesday, an anonymous hacker posted a 125GB torrent on 4chan's messaging board. The torrent contained leaked data, including:

  • Twitch source code for mobile devices
  • Desktop clients and video game consoles
  • Payment reports for creators
  • Information from internal security tools
  • Proprietary SDK code
  • AWS Internal Services Code
  • Crucial details about a still-unreleased Steam competitor from Amazon Game Studios.

After analyzing the data, Hackread.com was able to confirm the authenticity of the leaked data. The leaked data included details of the most popular and highest-paid video game streamers on Twitch since 2019.

For example, it contained $ 9.6 million worth of creator pay details from voice actors from the popular game Dungeons & Dragons and $ 8.4 million payouts from Canadian streamer xQcOW.

Hackers refer to the leak as part one, which means there will be more to come soon. Taking a look at Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, the hackers scoffed:

"Bezos paid $ 970 million for this, we are giving it away for FREE."

Twitch Response

Twitch claims that it is still evaluating the impact of the infringement. It has reset all transmission keys and codes that allow streamers to connect and post content on the platform to mitigate the threat.

The company clarified that there were no indications of data exploitation and that it does not store full credit card details. According to Chronicle of videogames, the Twitch hacker perhaps wanted to cause disruption and competition in the industry.
