MATHURA: Before the implementation of the government's plan to monetize power transmission assets, the performance of private power distribution companies must be evaluated by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court, the spokesman for the Congress of Uttar Pradesh, Ashok Singh.

"An investigation by a sitting judge of the supreme court would expose the actual performance of Torrent Power in Agra," Singh told reporters here. Torrent Power is a Rs 13,641 crore integrated power company of the Rs 21,500 crore Torrent Group.

It is present throughout the energy value chain: generation, transmission and distribution. Torrent Power has been supplying Agra with electricity for over a decade. The people of Agra are fed up with Torrent's services and the company is turning a deaf ear to consumer problems, Singh said.

Singh also sought some amendments to the anti-desertion law. If an MLA is unable to participate in elections for at least a year after defection, those who scoff at the democratic process will be kept in check, the congressional spokesman said.

Singh, who is visiting Mathura, said congressional activists and Agra officials are of the view that the removal of the Center's three farm laws and the granting of legal status to the MSP should be included in the party's manifesto for the elections in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly to be held early next. year.

Considering the plight of potato growers in the area, Congress wants an increase in the MSP for potato by at least 50 percent, he said.
